As defined in the NTAXS rules, “The driver and all vehicle passengers must each wear a helmet with Snell M-2005 or SA-2005 (or newer) certification.”  Snell is a helmet certification that is updated every five years by the Snell Memorial Foundation, so NTAXS currently allows M-2005, M-2010, M-2015, SA-2005, SA-2010, and SA-2015.  The M certifications are for motorcycle use, but most autocross clubs (including NTAXS) allow them.  Many tracks require helmets with SA (automotive sports) certification, so if you are buying a new helmet for autocrossing, consider an SA certification over an M certification, since there is wider acceptance should you decide to try your car on the track.

SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A; ECE R22.05; FIA standards 8859-2015, 8860-2010, 8860-
2004; or British spec BS6658-85 type A are also acceptable, but less common.

You can determine if a helmet is Snell certified by looking for the Snell certification decal on the inside of the helmet, on the shell under the padding.  The certification decals are similar to the following:

If your helmet does not have a Snell decal, then it is not certified.

You can purchase helmets from a variety of local and online retailers, including motorcycle shops, auto racing shops, Walmart, and Amazon.  Open-faced helmets are cheaper, but they tend to be less available at local shops.  Make sure that whatever you purchase has a supported Snell certification, or it will be useless for autocrossing.

If you do not have a supported helmet, then the NTAXS provides free loaner helmets.  You are required to wear a headsock when using the helmet.  You can pick up a “painter’s sock” prior to the event at many hardware stores, or you can purchase one at the event from NTAXS for $5.00.  NTAXS has a limited quantity of loaner helmets, and you should only have possession of the helmet when you are actively driving or riding.  You need to pick up the helmet just before your runs and return it just after your runs.  That way, everyone has the most access to loaner helmets.
