The North Texas Autocross Series (NTAXS) hosts autocross events in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We focus on simple classing, casual and efficient events, and high seat time. We limit our events to 65 attendees in order to achieve this.
The NTAXS spawned from the North Texas S2000 Owners Club (NTS2KOC), which began hosting autocrosses in 2001. In 2009, the NTS2KOC began marketing their autocrosses under the NTAXS banner in order to attract more than Honda S2000 owners. In 2014, the NTAXS became an official non-profit organization (501c3) in order to carry on the foundation created by the NTS2KOC. We still maintain a class just for Honda S2000s to keep our historical perspective.
A Brief History and Trivia
The first North Texas S2000 Owners Club (NTS2KOC) autocross event was on September 8th, 2001 at Mineral Wells Airport. There were only six participants, which included five Honda S2000s and one Porsche 968.
During the first few events, the timing gear did not have separate start and finish lights, so the course was setup to pass through the same lights to start and stop the lights. At the first event, it was an all-you-could-run in hot lap format!
The February 28, 2004 event was the first to use the DLB Racing web site for registration.
Prior to 2009, all of the autocross equipment was brought to Mineral Wells for each event via a pair of S2000s, one pulling a small trailer. This was possible because all of the large equipment (cones, tents, tables, chairs, and so on) was stored in an enclosed trailer on the southwest corner of the lot. It was not until the 2009 season when events were held outside of Mineral Wells that all of the equipment (including cones, tents, and so on) was hauled by truck and trailer to each event.
The original club trailer was designed to carry a racing go-cart and be hauled behind an S2000 to carting events, but David Smart’s go-carting career was short-lived and the trailer was donated to the club. That trailer now resides with autocrosser Keith Smith. The current club trailer was built by autocrosser Lorin Stolz to carry his riding lawn mower prior to being leased to the club.
Tragedy occurred during the November 11, 2006 event at Mineral Wells Airport when a small airplane crashed on the grounds near the event. The event was halted for emergency vehicles use the event lot in order to access the crashed plane.
The February 24, 2007 event at Mineral Wells Airport was cancelled part way through the event because of high winds. The winds blew up so much sand and gravel from the surface that you could not look into the wind, which made it unsafe to work at corner stations. The wind also started to blow large pieces of debris (fencing, metal roofs, and so on) on to the lot, making vehicular damage or personal injury a possibility. You could not walk without leaning well into the wind. The sky was brown.
After the 2008 season, the NTS2KOC events were on the verge of collapse, as attendance at Mineral Wells events (for all clubs) began to dwindle and the current NTS2KOC event stewards were ready to retire their roles. A January 18, 2009 meeting at Café Brazil organized by David Temming saved the NTS2KOC autocross events. It was at this meeting that Jerrett Jan took over the helm for autocross events and new managers (including David Temming, Mick Harrison, Hal Collins, Sam Mauro, and Thomas Hiromoto) were put in place. It was also the birth of the North Texas Autocross Series (NTAXS) banner and events outside of Mineral Wells Airport.
The first event under the NTAXS banner was on 3/21/2009 at Pennington Field in Bedford. It was still the NTS2KOC, but marketed under NTAXS so as to not appear as an S2000-only event.
Until the 3/21/2009 event, all NTS2KOC events had been held at Mineral Wells airport. Since the 3/21/2009 event at Pennington Field, NTAXS events have also been held at Dallas Raceway, Texas Motor Speedway Bus Lot, Mesquite Memorial High School, and Lone Star Park.
The 3/21/2009 event was also the first event under Jerrett Jan's direction. Mark Lang and Canadice Stein had previously managed the events.
The first NTAXS Winter Autocross was on 1/17/2010 at Pennington Field.
NTAXS became an official organization on 11/15/2013. All NTS2KOC funds and equipment were transferred to NTAXS for the 2014 autocross season.
The original NTS2KOC autocross classes were S2000, S2000 R, OTHER, OTHER R, and MIATA. Starting in 2009, the classes were re-arranged to 1, 1R, 2, 2R, 3, 3R, and S2000. Classes X and XR were added later.
Mark Elistan designed all of the courses for the first year before turning it over to David Smart. Jerrett Jan took over course designs in 2008.
From the start, NTS2KOC and NTAXS events have adhered to good courses, eight runs, limited classes, and fun. These, along with safety and execution, are the core values. Preparation, limiting the number of participants, and dividing the day into an A/B/Lunch/A/B format help achieve this.
